Archive--Marie Curie Exhibit at SUNY Farmingdale
On Saturday, June 2, 2001 LIMSAT opened a terrific exhibit about Marie Curie and
women who contributed greatly to nuclear science in the last century.
Colorful pictures told the story of one hundred years of science innovation.
With the use of a Geiger counter, visitors to the exhibit 'listened' to the
sound of natural radioactivity in everyday items like beach sand and sidewalk
salt. Guests took a 'nuclear quiz,' looked at Marie Curie's original Lab
equipment, and examined MRI's, CT Scans, and X-rays on a light box. This
traveling exhibit, specially modified and arranged for LIMSAT, was with us for
one month.
Officially named "Marie Curie: One Hundred Years of Science Innovation," the exhibition was funded by LIPA, supported by SYMBOL Technologies, Inc, and benefited from the generosity of a donation from the Long Island American Nuclear Society to be used for education materials. Local business contributed to the success of the exhibit a very large way. Gregory Abbate of ExopDepot in Farmingdale donated the exhibit panels and set up the entire display assisted by our staff, his staff and volunteers. Greg brought on board William Entwhistle of Village Office Supplies to help move the exhibit panels to the exhibition site. LIMSAT appreciates the involvement of community members in our efforts to bring science and technology to the public in an exciting way. |
