Museum To Go....Murphy Junior High Students Move a Museum!

Paper was flying, boxes were being taped, teams of students were searching for tools, files and exhibits to pack up for moving.  LIMSAT, the Long Island Museum of Science and Technology was being boxed to move to its new home in Mitchel Field, where it will join the Cradle of Aviation Museum and the Long Island Children‘s Museum on Museum Row.

“This is like a treasure hunt,” said one young lady who was part of the tool team.  “We have to locate all the tools, find the right size boxes, pack them in and make a list for the label on the outside of the box.”  She seemed to think this was ‘cool.’  Computer exhibits, a hand battery, tons of technology equipment, all had to be readied for the moving van.  Teacher Tom Lyons of Ward Melville High School, who had offered to find a team of students who would volunteer, drafted Teacher Judy Kaplan of Murphy Junior High School.  Judy found 9 students who agreed to come ‘back to school’ before Summer break.   The group, part of the H.E.L.P. Club (Helping Everyone Live Proudly) has Judy as Advisor.

“Thank you, thank you, thank you, “ said LIMSAT Director of Operations Janet Tempel.  “We could not have done this without your help, and I enjoyed the experience.  I hope you had as much fun as I did.”  To Advisor Judy Kaplan she said “Students kept moving, finishing one task and then asking for another.”  Except for a pizza and soda break and one ‘photo op’ the students worked non-stop for several hours and then left, as full of fun and energy as when they had arrived.  Thirty assorted boxes had been packed, labeled and numbered for the move.  Thanks to Tom Lyons, about 20 computer components had been tied, taped and organized.  Exhibits were tagged, packed, stacked and readied for the movers.  Exhibits and displays had been cut down from the ceiling, wires were removed or rearranged.  Almost the whole Museum had been readied for the movers, Plycon Van Lines of Kings Park who donated their services to move LIMSAT.  Their Executive Secretary Arthur Pliaconis looked over the Museum and cheerfully offered to donate his company’s services  to move LIMSAT to Mitchel Field.

As the flurry began to die down, the students started cleaning up loose styrofoam and papers that had been used for padding.  “Let us know if we can be of help in the future”, said Judy Kaplan.  “There is another group called J.U.S.T.I.C.E. (Join Us Students Together In Creating Equality) that get involved in Community service.  These are all terrific kids.”  We certainly agree!
